Research by Dr. Brian Graves, faculty at Florida Atlantic University shows that despite rising cannabis use, fewer people with cannabis use disorder (CUD) are getting treatment, with rates dropping from 19% in 2003 to just 13% in 2019. The top barriers include not knowing where to get help, not feeling ready to quit, cost, stigma, and fear of job-related consequences. Those involved in the criminal justice system or receiving mental health care were more likely to seek treatment, while racial disparities in access have narrowed over time. Most people with CUD are men, often older and lower-income, and treatment most commonly occurs in outpatient programs or self-help groups. Researchers call for better education, reduced stigma, and more affordable, accessible care to close the growing gap between need and treatment.
